Details

Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a 13 square mile oasis of native grasslands and wetlands. 240 species of birds, mountain cottontail, common muskrat, American badger, striped skunk, common raccoon, long-tailed weasel, Richardson's ground squirrel, coyote, and a limited number of white-tailed deer, mule deer, pronghorn, reptiles, and amphibian species are found on the Refuge. Take Highway 87 (Havre Highway) north out of Great Falls, Montana for about a mile, then turn left onto Bootlegger Trail. Drive approximately 9 miles to the Refuge entrance on the left. CAUTION: Hunting is permitted during certain months.

Loons, Grebes, Pelicans, Cormorants, Bitterns, Herons, Ibis, Swans, Geese, Ducks, Hawks, Eagles, Falcons, Gallinaceous Birds, Rails, Coots, Cranes, Shorebirds, Gulls, Terns, Doves, Cuckoos, Owls, Goatsuckers, Kingfishers, Woodpeckers, Flycatchers, Larks, Swallows, Magpies, Crows, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Wrens, Thrushes, Mimic Thrushes, Pipits, Waxwings, Shrikes, Starlings, Warblers, Tanagers, Sparrows, Blackbirds, Orioles, Finches, Weaver Finches.
